The Charity
of One

Every individual. One agent. Complete philanthropic agency.

Coined by John Judge · Author, GiveIQ (2026)

§ 01

Definition

A Charity of One is the principle that every individual can operate as a self-directed, high-accountability philanthropic agent — without requiring a foundation, board, or institution to validate their impact.

The concept treats personal judgment — Time, Talent, Treasure, Trust, and Thought — as a complete giving system. It is the individual-scale unit within Agentic Philanthropy: the framework for using AI to amplify human agency in giving.

§ 02

Origin

John Judge first articulated the precursor — intelligent philanthropy — under the name GiveIQ in the late 1990s. The URL has been held continuously since 2007.

In 2026, the concept evolved into Agentic Philanthropy, presented in the foundational text GiveIQ: Purpose and Philanthropy in the Age of AI and operationalized at GiveIQ.ai.

Judge is a Harvard Kennedy School graduate, a four-time nonprofit CEO, and holds a B.A. from Stonehill College and an Honorary Doctorate. He coined the term Agentic Philanthropy and originated the Charity of One.
